Romney - "If for some reason they continue down their course of folly toward nuclear ambition, then I would take military action if that's available to us."

That comment was firmly criticized by Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards who earlier this year said basically the same thing:

"Iran must know that the world won’t back down. The recent UN resolution ordering Iran to halt the enrichment of uranium was not enough. We need meaningful political and economic sanctions. We have muddled along for far too long. To ensure that Iran never gets nuclear weapons, we need to keep ALL options on the table, Let me reiterate – ALL options must remain on the table."

I guess "all options" just sounds better than military action.

Fortunately no one will ever have to worry about Edwards being in a position to make such a decision.

According to alternet information about how the a war with Iran may start has been leaked.

"In the scenario concocted by Cheney's strategists, Washington's first step would be to convince Israel to fire missiles at Iran's uranium enrichment plant in Natanz. Tehran would retaliate with its own strike, providing the US with an excuse to attack military targets and nuclear facilities in Iran."

On the subject of the USA going to war with Iran Presidential candidate John McCain recently said war with Iran was "maybe closer to reality than we are discussing tonight."

Some feel that war with Iran is inevitable, others are not so sure. It would be somewhat easy for Bush to prove that Tehran, by supporting insurgents in Iraq, is responsible for the deaths of American soldiers. It might be harder to prove that Iran's nuclear plans pose an immediate threat to the world. The real question is would the USA back a president or military action against Iran if the only real case for war was the death of some US troops in Iraq?

Hillary Clinton's first (and if there is a god, last) "Presidential Bust" is set to be unveiled this week at New York's Museum of Sex.

Sculptor Daniel Edwards says the work portrays Clinton's "youthful spirit and a face matured by wisdom," adding, "Presented in a low cut gown, her cleavage is on display prominently portraying sexual power which some people still consider too threatening."

In an interview with the Associated Press on why he takes on celebrity subjects, Edwards said, "You're bombarded with these stories. And there's a thread that winds back to the art. That's not a bad thing. People are interested in these topics, and it works for art as well."

Edwards stepped into the national spotlight a few months ago with a life-size nude of Britney Spears giving birth on a bearskin rug. Hopefully he steps out of the spotlight just as quick as he stepped into it.

Does the USA Have to do Everything?

With the recent events in the Middle East - especially the conflict between Israel and Iran/Syria (let's be honest - they're using Lebanon as a proxy) I'm once again reminded that the rest of the world, besides the USA, is completely helpless. That includes every country calling for a "cease-fire." You can't have a cease-fire with a group who's sole purpose is wiping your country off the face of the earth. All a cease fire will accomplish is giving the terrorists time to regroup launch more rockets at Israeli civilians.

Every country has its share of "peace at all costs hippies" who hold marches and protests for the wrong side. I just don't get the logic behind their actions. Do they really think if Israel stops the offensive the terrorists will stop killing civilians and let them live in peace?

Unfortunately, my hunch is we'll eventually see the USA step in with a solution - which may very well end up being troops. The UN is about as worthless as an ice cube in the North Pole and I don't see any other countries stepping up with a solution...besides the ignorant cease-fire proposals.

Hopefully I'm wrong.

U.S. Aid Arrives in Beirut

Once again the USA steps up to the plate and helps those who are unwilling to help themselves by ridding their country of a radical terrorist group.

The first shipment of American aid for Lebanon arrived in Beirut on Tuesday and Israel promised to open vital safe passages as humanitarian groups pushed more convoys of supplies to tens of thousands in the war-torn south.

U.S. Ambassador Jeffrey Feltman said the shipment was the first in $30 million worth of aid from the United States. "We hope it will address some of the most pressing needs of the conflict victims. The United States remained deeply concerned about the humanitarian situation in Lebanon."

Asked if there were a contradiction between U.S. arms sales to Israel and aid supplies to Lebanon, Feltman said Washington's position was based on "two pillars to how we need to deal with the conflict. One pillar is humanitarian assistance. ... The other is to find conditions for a sustainable cease-fire."

Iraq’s New Cabinet Introduced

After three weeks of consultations between different political parties, Iraqi Prime Minister Ibrahim al-Jaafari has introduced his new cabinet. There are 16 Shia Arabs, 8 Kurds, 6 Sunni Arabs, 1 Turkmen (who is also Shia), and 1 Assyrian in Iraq’s new cabinet.

Although the balanced cabinet is in accordance with the political participation of Iraq’s political and ethnic groups, no minister has yet been appointed for five of the six ministries that were set aside for the Sunni Arabs, which indicates that a segment of the minority cannot accept that they will no longer wield a disproportionate share of power in the new Iraq and are still seeking to gain control of key ministries in the new government.

Shortly after the National Assembly approved the new government team, Jaafari announced that giving the Sunni Arabs control of six ministries would not be compatible with their participation in the elections. In fact, if more Sunni Arabs had participated in Iraq’s general election, which introduced a new form of democracy to the Arab world, they could have gained control of more ministries.

On a side, and somewhat ironic note, the new cabinet was formed on Saddam's birthday.

Blair Reveals Secret Advice

With only a week to go until the general election, British Prime Minister Tony Blair gave in to public and political pressure and made public the secret advice he got on the legality of the war in Iraq. His decision was surprising considering he has been steadfastly refusing requests to make it public for months.

During a recent press conference in London Blair stated that he had no regrets about taking Britain into the US-led invasion that brought about the overthrow of Saddam Hussein.

Abu Musab al-Zarqawi's Laptop Seized

It's being reported that US officials think they barely missed capturing Zarqawi during raids that landed two of his associates in February.

During a news conference at the Pentagon Gen. Richard Myers, who is chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said: "We were close." He declined to elaborate.

"Zarqawi, who has a $25 million bounty on his head, is thought to have orchestrated car bombings, kidnappings, assassinations and beheadings across Iraq.

Troops with a covert military unit were reportedly in place to arrest him as he was on his way to Ramadi, but he caught wind of them, ABC News reported late Monday, citing an unidentified senior military official.

The official said that a car was pulled over as it approached a checkpoint. A pickup trailing the car then turned and headed in the opposite direction.

Officials think Zarqawi was in the fleeing truck, but when U.S. teams pulled the vehicle over several miles later, he was not inside, ABC reported. In the truck, the official told ABC, U.S. troops found Zarqawi's computer and about $104,000."

On the bright side, at least the US seized Zarqawi's laptop. It's being reported that the laptop contains information on multiple subjects including Zarqawi's health and his "My Pictures" folder.

"His computer ... has provided a treasure trove of information," says a Pentagon official who asked to remain nameless.
